NGO Mission & Background:
Parivartan believes that education enables a child to look at life with new vision, consider fresh opportunities and widen his or her horizons. With this aim Parivartan provides informal education to those children who are not able to attend school due to various social and economic issues. The main reasons for lack of educational opportunities for these children are the migrant nature of their families and the location of their houses in slums that are not serviced by municipal schools. Parivarthan's aim is to train these kids to a point where they are able to get admitted a municipal school.
NGO Achievements so far:
Parivarthan has gone from being operated by one person (Shakeel Ahmed, Founder) with a vision and a dream to currently running two centers with five teachers and approximately 120 students. A handful of students have moved to the municipal school and are doing well. One student has returned to become a teacher with Parivarthan while he finishes his college degree.
NGO Future Goals:
Sangam Nagar, the slum where Parivartan operates, has over 200,000 residents. The slum is divided into twelve mohollas (neighborhoods). Parivartan currently serves only two of these mohollas, Azad Nagar and Bhartiya Kamla Nagar. Even children in these schools don't always have access to houses with electricity and a quiet place to study In 2007-08, Parivartan would like to expand services to one additional moholla and start a Community Center where kids can borrow books and study. Longer-term, they would like to set up a school in each of the twelve mohollas.
